The Learn to Swim Awards 1- 8 are divided into progressive stages. They make up the core, national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children.

They are designed to reward your child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water.

Each of the Learn to Swim Awards 1-8 stages has a list of clear outcomes that need to be completed in order to gain each award.

DUCKLINGS

Face in water blowing bubbles
With 2 floats, kick legs on front with face in water
With 2 floats, kick legs on back
Regain an upright position from back, with 2 float support
Regain an upright position from front, with 2 float support
Attempt push and glide in a horizontal position on the front from the water.

STAGE ONE

Face in water blowing bubbles confidently
With 1 float, kick legs on front with face in water, legs straight, toes pointed
With 1 float, kick legs on back with good flat body position, straight legs and fast shallow kick
Regain an upright position from back, with 1 float support
Regain an upright position from front, with 1 float support
Attempt front crawl arms over water
Attempt back crawl arms
Push and glide in a horizontal position on front from the wall

STAGE TWO

Jump in from poolside safely
Streamlined push and glide on front and back regaining an upright position with no support
Swim 3 mtrs front crawl with face in water with arms clearing the water and good body position
Swim 3 mtrs back stroke with arms straight clearing the water and good body position
Knowledge of breastroke kick on front or back with noodle
Knowledge of breathing to the side on front crawl

STAGE THREE

Swim 6 mtrs Front crawl with arms clearing the water and breathing to the side
Swim 6 mtrs Backstroke with good arm stroke and body position
Good Breastroke kick on front with either 2 floats or noodle
Knowledge of breastroke arms
Streamlined push from wall on front and perform a log roll
Streamlined push from wall on front with front tumble

STAGE FOUR

Swim 10 mtrs front crawl, starting from a push and glide, breathing to the side and arms clearing the water
Swim10 mtrs backstroke, starting with a push and glide, with good body position and straight controlled arms
Swim 5 mtrs of good breastroke arms with a noodle
Attempt full stroke legal brestroke
Swim 5 mtrs butterfly kick on front and back with arms by side
Perform on back a feet first sculling action for 5 mtrs

STAGE FIVE

Swim 15 mtrs front crawl with good body position, arms clearing the water water and bilateral breathing
Swim 15 mtrs backstroke with good body position, straight arms and good strong continuous pull
Swim 15 mtrs good legal breastroke with timing
Swim 10 mtrs butterfly with correct legs
Jump in deep water and tread water for 30 seconds confidently, swim to side
Attempt front crawl turn at the wall

STAGE SIX

Swim 25 mtrs front crawl with good body position, arms clearing the water and bilateral breathing
Swim 25 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms and good strong continuous pull
Swim 25 mtrs Breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 15 mtrs butterfly and then turn on back and finish length with fly kick on back, arms by side
Attempt front crawl and backstroke turns at the wall
Attempt sitting dive

STAGE SEVEN

Swim 50 mtrs frontcrawl with good body position, arms clearing the water, bilateral breathing and attempt turn at wall
Swim 50 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms, attempt turn at wall
Swim 50 mtrs breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 20 mtrs butterfly with good arm recovery and legs together
Perform breaststroke and butterfly turns with good push and glide streamlining
Perform a sitting dive

STAGE EIGHT

Swim 75 mtrs frontcrawl with good body position, arms clearing the water, bilateral breathing and front crawl turn
Swim 75 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms and back turn
Swim 75 mtrs breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 33 mtrs butterfly with good arm recovery and legs together
Swim 100 mtrs as 4 x 1L IM (Individual Medley)
Perform a racing dive

Swim 25 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms and good strong continuous pull
Swim 25 mtrs Breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 15 mtrs butterfly and then turn on back and finish length with fly kick on back, arms by side
Attempt front crawl and backstroke turns at the wall
Attempt sitting dive

STAGE SEVEN

Swim 50 mtrs frontcrawl with good body position, arms clearing the water, bilateral breathing and attempt turn at wall
Swim 50 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms, attempt turn at wall
Swim 50 mtrs breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 20 mtrs butterfly with good arm recovery and legs together
Perform breaststroke and butterfly turns with good push and glide streamlining
Perform a sitting dive

STAGE EIGHT

Swim 75 mtrs frontcrawl with good body position, arms clearing the water, bilateral breathing and front crawl turn
Swim 75 mtrs backstroke with good body position, good leg kick and straight arms and back turn
Swim 75 mtrs breastroke with good timing and legal stroke
Swim 33 mtrs butterfly with good arm recovery and legs together
Swim 100 mtrs as 4 x 1L IM (Individual Medley)
Perform a racing dive
