Expected Standards when Teaching Swimming at The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club

Your contribution as a Swimming Teacher is very important to us – you help us make the Borough of Harrow Swimming Club a special place for our parents and their children. It is also a very responsible role that requires a level of conduct and understanding to ensure that their lesson are fair and appropriate for their age.

At the Borough of Harrow Swimming Club we take our duty of care towards our children very seriously and it is a condition of you working with us that you help us to maintain our high safety standards and agree to abide by the rules of conduct below.

General Conduct

  • You should arrive to work in sufficient time such that you can prepare for your lesson. In the instance of lateness the learn to swim co-ordinator needs to be informed prior to the taught lesson.
  • You are responsible for the setting up and packing away of your working area.
  • Consistently display high standards of behaviour and appearance when working both in and out of the water.
  • Time off needs to be given in advanced with appropriate cover supplied. This needs to be approved by the learn to swim co-ordinator.
  • Treat all information of a personal nature about individual swimmers as confidential, except in circumstances where to do so will allow the child to be placed at risk of harm or continue to be at risk of harm.
  • Continue to seek and maintain their own professional development in all areas in relation to teaching children.

Health and Safety

  • When you are teaching children there must be a lifeguard on duty throughout the lesson time.
  • When you are teaching for the Borough of Harrow Swimming Club you have a duty of care to the children in the class you are teaching. That means that you must take responsibility for the children’s safety and wellbeing at all times.
  • Never engage in any conversations with parents whilst you are in a position of supervision, teaching or responsible for children.
  • You must ensure that you keep an accurate register at all times.
  • Teaching area is consistently managed (equipment not being left around and their area being packed away at the end of the session.
  • You must not turn your back on any child at any time during the lesson; you must be able to clearly see all children throughout the lesson.
  • If you are teaching beginners in the water you must be able to reach at a stretch every child at all times during the lesson, this means that you remains  close enough to provide physical support if required to all children throughout the lesson.
  • You should only use methods of manual support that are appropriate to the age and ability of the learner.
  • Manual support should only be given when necessary and only for as long as it is required.
  • You should keep your hands in view whenever possible whilst providing manual support.
  • You should ensure that whenever possible the children are not left sitting on the poolside edge, the class should be taught as a group not as 1-1’s.
  • You must ensure that if a child needs to exit the water during the lesson for the toilet, feeling unwell or any other reason the following process is followed
    • Keep the child on the poolside close to where you are teaching
    • Gain the child’s parent / carer attention on the gallery
    • If the parent cannot be seen request the administrator to get the child’s parent to come to poolside.
    • You must not allow the child to leave poolside until you see that their parent collects them.

Quality Teaching

  • You must demonstrate a clear appreciation and understanding of the technical content involved.
  • You must teach using a wide range of appropriate practices and progressions related to the skill and relevant to the status of the learners.
  • You must demonstrate a great knowledge of how to use the most appropriate equipment to provide the right degree of support in order to correct or develop the performance of a skill.
  • You must have the capacity to observe the learners’ responses to a task and make decisions about what should happen next i.e.,
    • Modify the practice – make it easier or harder
    • Provide more or less support
    • Make another attempt
  • You must have the ability to analyse how an activity has been performed, and follow up with constructive feedback and/or praise for some aspect of the performance.
  • You must complete the register of attendance and record progress for all the swimmers you are teaching.
  • You must make effective use of the time available.
