The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club

SQUADS

LAND TRAINING

Land training is an important part of a competitive swimmers programme.

The aims of land training are

• To build strength – particularly core strength;

• To increase fitness levels;

• To improve flexibility.

This training, when combined with water-based training, will noticeably improve swimming speed.

The club offers land training to swimmers in most squads under the guidance and direction of the Head Coach.

club shop

The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club runs a club shop for all of your swimming equipment needs, with all proceeds helping to finance the running of the club. We endeavour to have the club shop available for you to purchase items on Saturday morning 8.00am-9.45am at Harrow Leisure Centre.

Club squad’s kit can be purchased directly via MG Sportswear, our approved supplier of official club kit.

Items can be purchased directly via the club branded online store at

SQUADS STRUCTURE

Our competitive squads provide a pathway for swimmers to develop and remain within the competitive arena of the sport.

The club’s structure is designed to progress a swimmer through the various stages of development. The club operates in a competitive environment and therefore your swimmer will be expected to dedicate enough time to enable them to train and compete in galas and meets.

As a general guide, younger swimmers usually start from our Foundation Squad, working towards the Junior Development Squads. Older swimmers joining the club and those transferring from another competitive club may be assessed and offered a place in a squad appropriate to their current level.

Swimmers will move through the club structure, as they develop their technique and speed, at the discretion of their coach. Their development and progression will be determined by physical and mental development as well as maturity. Movement between each elements of the squad can occur at any time.

Harrow Swimming Club is a competitive swimming club and invests in each individual’s personal strengths. The coaches structure squads so that every person in that squad can excel by training with those of a similar ability, age, pace and attainment level. Lead coaches are constantly assessing progress, commitment and development so, when places become available in a squad, will make recommendations for swimmers to move to the appropriate squad which will bring out the best in that individual. It is a fine balance between making training fun and yet challenging swimmers to stretch themselves.

You can talk to your lead coach for feedback at the end of your training session if you would like to know more about your personal progress.

Parents can schedule an appointment with their child’s coach using the following link https://www.harrowswim.club/coaches-appointments/

When moving between squads, the Head Coach decision is always final.

Squad Movement

The BHSC Squad Structure has been developed to offer a pathway for all swimmers to develop within the club with a focus on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). We must note that these will evolve and that there is a broad variation in our swimmers in terms of: age, physical strengths, motivation, inherent skill, competition Performance  and future potential. These factors will go some way to determine which squad is best of a swimmer.

Each Squad should be seen as a Spring Board (rather than a ceiling) for each swimmer to develop, grow and improve upon. Use the training and experience of the coaches to your maximum, there is no limit to what you can achieve within each squad with the right attitude.

Swimmers should be working towards meeting the entry criteria for each of the squads. All movements between squads are reviewed by the BHSC coaches at coaches meetings and will take into account swimmers performances, training, commitment, attitude and attendance. The Head Coach, in consultation with the team of coaches may at their discretion and with good reason, authorise movements that do not comply strictly with the entry criteria for a particular squad. Please note that due to limited numbers, places within each squad will be taken by swimmers showing the greatest Long Term potential based on current performances, training, commitment, attendance records and attitude. This will also apply to swimmers and squads within the Club Swimming Pathway.

Each swimmer is an individual and every progression or transition from squad to squad is treated differently. The criteria for each squad act as goals for the swimmers to achieve and therefore they also provide reward when achieved. Sport is not an exact science and many factors come into play when progressing athletes at a rate that suits each individual. The coaches will discuss swimmers taking into account past & present knowledge of the individuals with regards to commitment, attitude, competition results, and abilities in training etc. Each will progress at different rates and display various strengths and weaknesses which will contribute to the coaches choosing the most suitable method of progressing.

This will normally be in one of two ways:

1.    A straight move up into the next squad. This is normally for older swimmers with excellent training abilities and awareness.

2.    Transition Training: a swimmer will have a more gradual transition by doing some sessions in their current squad and some sessions in the next squad. This will normally be for younger swimmers to ensure they can gradually cope with the different training environment and levels.

Examples of considerations to be made when swimmers progress may include:

  • Experience
  • Abilities
  • Commitment
  • Attitude
  • Punctuality
  • Knowledge
  • Better competitor or trainer
  • Previous injuries or illness
  • Rate of recovery
  • Maturity
  • Age
  • Sensitive stages of growth and development
  • Social behaviour
  • Rates of progression

Team Selection

The Borough of Harrow swimming club participates in many team galas including both friendly and league galas. The league galas are an important part of the club and currently we participate in two main leagues:

•Junior League
• National Arena League

As a successful club, we compete in Division 1 of the above leagues. For a smaller town club this is a tremendous achievement and as such, to be selected as part of the team for one of these galas is something to be very proud of.

Team selection is generally based upon rankings, however, coaches discretion is applied to ensure we field the strongest team for each event. We try to ensure every swimmer selected has at least two swims, but in some cases Swimmers may only be picked for a single event where it makes a significant advantage.

Any swimmer that is selected to represent The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club in a team gala will be expected to stay and support their team mates until the last race. This is taken into account when making team selections.

It is expected that every swimmer selected to swim for BHSC will give priority to the Club over “social” events. It is further expected that League galas, such as The National Arena League and The MKJL Junior League, take priority over other events for all team members, including individual open meet entries.

Selected team members will be expected to attend all training sessions as requested by their coach and take part in all programmed activities. A swimmer unable or unwilling to fulfill this commitment may be withdrawn from the team.

All selected team members must read and comply with the BHSC Code of Conduct for Swimmers. A breach of the BHSC Code of Conduct may result in de-selection from the team.

Swimmers will be expected to swim in assigned relays if asked to represent the Club at County/Regional/National Championships. The Club will not accept individual entries for the same competition from swimmers who refuse to swim their assigned relays

What do I do if I’m selected and I’m not available?

Inform your coach as soon as possible with the reason why.

Being unavailable for one of the league galas has a significant impact, not only to the club but also to every other member of the team.

Swimmers should do their utmost to be available for these leagues. As the league galas have such a high importance for the club.

Failure to be available or fail to attend will be taken into consideration when making future team selections and squad movements.

There can always be exceptional circumstances why a swimmer is unavailable to represent their club, therefore it is important to inform the coach of the reason for your unavailability.

Lane Discipline

Lane discipline is key to everyone getting the most from their session. We have some lane discipline standards that we would like swimmers to follow:

  • No diving in unless told to by a coach.
  •
  • Always start from the wall and travel in the correct direction.
  •
  • Following swimmers must leave a 5 second gap before setting off.
  •
  • All correct turns must be carried out.
  •
  • No stopping mid length. Allow a swimmer to overtake at the end of the pool.
  •
  • Swimmers must overtake without tapping or grabbing the swimmer in front.
  •
  • All swimmers must finish at the wall and move to the side to allow the incoming swimming to touch.
  •
  • Only take the required rest.
  •
  • No sitting on the lane ropes or floats.
  •
  • No splashing or spitting.
  •
  • Pay attention to instructions. Ask coaches if unsure about anything – do not stop other swimmers if you are in doubt.
  •
  • Respect all swimmers, leisure staff and the coaching team
  •
  • TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE TREATED!!

training venues

At The Borough of Harrow Swimming Clubs, we know that being a great swimmer is about more than stamina and technique. This is why we support our swimmers with a range of additional offers, which makes THE BHSC unique in many ways.

All of our competitive squad swimmers have access to land training, specially designed by an experienced personal trainer to address common concerns for swimmers such as building core strength and stability, flexibility and injury prevention. In addition, we offer Gym sessions for Regional & Performance Squad.

Behaviour Standards
Exemplary behaviour is expected of club members at all times. We often share facilities with members of the public and other clubs and we expect swimmers to show that the club has the highest standards. Older swimmers, in particular, are expected to set an example to younger ones.

There are a number of training venues that BHSC uses and they are as follows:
